Confusion galore

July 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - MANGALURU:

Confusion abounded in Mangaluru and Dakshina Kannada on Tuesday as to whether a holiday had been declared for government offices and educational institutions, on account of the demise of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

While many newspapers stated that the State government has declared a one-day holiday, besides a week’s mourning, early morning messages on social media and television channels said otherwise. With this, many government servants and students were put in a dilemma. The Hindu had carried news that a holiday had not been declared.

Though the situation became clear after Chief Secretary Kaushik Mukherjee’s message that there would be only State mourning, attendance was thin in many schools across the city and the district. Many schools worked only for a half-day.
