Though Mangalore was sanctioned a Doordarshan Kendra, with a studio to produce local programs, the dream never materialised. Nobody, including the elected representatives, worked for this cause, it is said. The Kendra has remained only a transmission centre for all practical purposes.

It started functioning at Hat Hill on July 21, 1984. In 2001, it was shifted to Vamanjoor.
