The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has made it mandatory for contractors, who are executing the corporation’s road works, to also take up works related to laying drains and footpaths. Declining to take up the work will affect the works that are allotted to them, the MCC has said.

MCC Deputy Commissioner Gokuldas Nayak said this during a meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim. Mr. Nayak was responding to a query by Mr. Ibrahim regarding progress made in the work of laying drains and footpaths on seven road stretches that have been concreted.

Mr. Nayak said no one had showed interest to take up the work for which an amount of Rs. 35 crore was sanctioned three years ago. Following a decision taken earlier in a review meeting, a proposal was sent to the government to permit allocation of work to Dakshina Kannada Nirmiti Kendra. The State government rejected as no work could be directly allotted under the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurements Act.
