Till a few years back, the release of a 3D film used to be an event, for it used to happen once in a decade or so. These days, though, at least when one considers the number of such films from Hollywood, it looks more like the norm than the exception. Now, those who are not satisfied even with the three dimensions have something to look forward to.

A 9D theatre recently opened in the city, promising to make you physically feel just about anything that happens on the screen, from a pleasant drizzle to a car accident. The theatre, located at Chettikulangara Junction, has been drawing the weekend crowds, mostly children.

“The viewers can feel everything that happens on the screen and they end up feeling that they are part of the film. The hydraulic seats can move in several directions and we have provided effects of snow, lightning, smoke, wind, rain, fire, and fog. When a racing sequence is happening, the audience actually feels they are driving the car and if it falls into a gorge, they will feel the weightlessness as it falls and a light thud when it hits the ground. Added to this, the smell effect means that the entire atmosphere on screen is recreated,” says Mohammed Ashraf, manager of the theatre.

The theatre has a collection of around 150 films, of five minutes each. Each show will be of 15 minutes duration and the viewers can choose a set of three films.

“The collection is a mix of action, horror, and children’s movies. Any set of three movies will enable the viewers to experience most of the effects. Most of these films were made in Japan or China. We are planning to introduce a mobile 9D van so that we can take it to schools and other hangout places,” says Mr. Ashraf.

He says that a full-length movie in 9D might not happen as even the 15-minute watch is as good as a workout. Contact – 0471-3302887.
