CCTV visuals help police track down duo

: The city police have once again used visuals captured on closed circuit television cameras to arrest two persons, including a woman, who had pulled off a gold heist at a newly opened jewellery in the city.

The heist had thrown a challenge to the police since the accused — identified as Nazila alias Zurumi, 25, and her relative, Badushah, 34, both natives of Manikavilakam, near Poonthura here — had pulled it off on the very day the outlet was inaugurated and because it was apparently only one woman who had managed to slip out unnoticed with gold bangles hidden on her.

C.S. Suresh Kumar, Circle Inspector, Pettah, said Nazila, who had allegedly carried out similar thefts in two jewelleries at East Fort and one at Mancheri in Malappuram, had reached the jewellery near the Government Ayurveda College on M.G. Road in Badushah’s autorickshaw at noon, and after studying the situation, returned around 7 p.m.

She spent an hour-and-a-half inside, while Badushah waited outside in the auto. During this period, she was frequently in touch with her accomplice on phone. The police said she selected a gold ring, and when the salesperson went to get the purchase billed, she stole the bangles before leaving the shop.

All the movements of the duo, right from when Nazila alighted from the auto and Badushah’s long wait on the opposite side of the road, were caught on CCTV cameras installed inside the outlet and police surveillance cameras outside. The investigation team was led by H. Venkatesh, City Police Commissioner, Jawahar Janardh, P. Bijoy, and K.E. Baiju, Assistant Commissioners, Mr. Suresh Kumar and others.

Booty recovered

The police recovered some of the booty from inside a flowerpot on the terrace of Nazila’s neighbour where she had hidden it. Investigations were on to find whether the duo was aided by more persons, Mr. Suresh Kumar said.

The accused were produced before court on Friday and remanded in judicial custody.
