KU’s first and third semester results delayed

July 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 07:56 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The delay in declaring the first and third semester B.A/B.Sc/B.Com. examination results has yet again raised questions about the Kerala University’s valuation system.

These delays are despite the university’s claim that they have computerised a portion of its valuation-tabulation-marks declaration processes. According to varsity sources, the computerised system is not being used by a majority of the staff associated with the centralised valuation camps.

The examinations of the third semester Choice-Based Credit Semester System courses got over in December 2014 and those of the first semester in January 2015.

Yet to reach camp

University staff associated with the preparation of the results said that the answer papers of the first semester examinations have not even been sent for evaluation to a CV camp. “The valuation of the third semester examination answer sheets has been completed and the marks are with the varsity for tabulation. The fourth semester exams got over in June and the second semester exams would begin only in July,” a varsity employee said.

An obvious method of speeding up the declaration of results is to avoid delay in copying marks from one sheet to another, decoding false numbers and transportation of answer sheets and mark sheets from the camp to the varsity office.

According to officials at the Kerala University Computer Centre, the computerised workflow was put in place for centralised valuation camps almost two years ago.

Merits of system

“In the computerised system, the marks are entered directly into the varsity server and not on to a mark sheet. At the tabulation section, these marks can be merged directly with the tabulation sheet for declaration of the results. Fact is, this system has already been used for some examinations with very good results. For some reason, it is yet to be adopted across all categories of examinations. One reason could be the fear that a computerised process would render redundant the varsity staff engaged in various duties at the valuation camps,” a University employee associated with tabulation work said.
