Chandy's assurance to Yemen returnees

April 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:54 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has offered to look into the rehabilitation of Keralites, most of whom are nurses, who were forced to return jobless from strife-torn Yemen, a statement issued by the Indian Nurses’ Parents’ Association here said.

The Chief Minister gave this assurance to Yemen returnees at a discussion with the latter at the Secretariat, the association said. Around 2,000 Keralites had returned from Yemen and many of them had to forfeit not just their jobs and savings but also their certificates and passports, while fleeing from the war. Mr.Chandy said the Yemen returnees would also be in the reckoning while considering vacancies abroad. Those who lost passports and certificates would be given new ones through Norka, the statement said. The nurses demanded waiver of their education loans. The Chief Minister has asked for a list of those with outstanding loans and the banks concerned. He also assured the association that the demand for pension for long-time workers and self-employment loans would be considered, the association claimed. — Special Correspondent
