About 400 students of the Holy Cross College were screened for hearing loss at a mass hearing screening camp organised by the college’s departments of Rehabilitation Science and Audiology and Speech Language Pathology on Tuesday.

The camp was organised as part of the International Ear Care Day. Organisers of the event said that many were susceptible to suffer from hearing loss in view of exposure to noise pollution and extensive use of electronic gadgets. Hearing loss goes unidentified quite often. The departments had planned to screen all the 5,000-odd students of the college for hearing loss. On Tuesday, about 400 students underwent the Pure Tone Audiometry test. The two departments would continue to conduct the test over the one month when students can bring their relatives or friends for check, a college representative said.

Presentations on causes of hearing loss and preventive measures were made.

Earlier, E. Ram Ganesh, Professor and Head, Department of Educational Technology, Bharathidasan University, the chief guest, said teenagers were susceptible to hearing loss due to over-use of mobile phones and headphone speakers.

Emphasising the need to reduce noise pollution, he said that in many countries, motorists would not use horns unless it was required or when there was an accident.

Sr. Jeusin Francis, Principal, was present.
