Government accepts Rs. 63-cr. drinking water project

German bank has offered to fund the project with loan, grant

July 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:48 am IST - TIRUCHI:

The State Government is likely to issue an order soon on a proposal sent by the Tiruchirappalli City Corporation (TCC) to implement a combined drinking water scheme for supplying protected water to the five extended wards in the city.

The Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) that studied the project has given its clearance. Similarly, the high-level committee that included the Chief Secretary has given its nod for implementing the scheme with the financial support of a German bank.

“The proposal has reached an advanced level. We are eagerly waiting the final clearance,” M. Vijayalakshm, Commissioner, Tiruchirapalli City Corporation told The Hindu recently.

Enquiries revealed that the Government Order was expected anytime from now. The corporation would then take a series of steps to implement the water scheme.

As per the Detailed Project Report (DPR), the project will be implemented at a cost Rs. 63.70 crore. Of this, the German bank will lend Rs. 25.48 crore (40 per cent of the project cost). It will offer an equal sum as grant. The civic body will have to mobilise Rs. 12.74 crore (20 per cent) from its own resources.

The scheme is aimed at supplying protected drinking to wards 61,62,63,64 and 65, which were merged with the corporation a few years ago. These wards are mainly located in Thiruverumbur and Kattur areas. It will enable the civic body to supply 135 litres of drinking water per day per head to the residents of Tiruverumbur and its adjoining areas as per the norms stipulated by the Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation. The residents of these areas now get only 40 litres of water per day per head through the existing schemes of the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD).

Per capita water supply in the new areas is just 40 litres

The new scheme will cover wards 61 to 65
