The Tiruchirappalli City Corporation has decided to install replicas of world monuments at the Green Park being raised with public participation at Panchapur on the outskirts of the city.

It is part of a proposal floated by the civic body to enrich the 22-acre park. Life size models of six world monuments, including Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal, London Bridge, and Opera House will be established in the middle of the park, which is slowly and steadily becoming a picnic spot for the residents of Tiruchi, particularly those living in Crawford, Edamalaipatti Pudur, Airport, and TVS Tollgate.

V.P. Thandapani, Corporation Commissioner, told The Hindu that the green initiative of the corporation was among the reasons for having chosen Tiruchi as the best corporation in the State. Although a number of initiatives had been taken to improve the park, it had been decided to transform it into a model park in the State. As of now, 1,432 saplings of various varieties including vembu , naval , neer maruthu, kumizh thekku , coconut, and palm trees had been planted. Many of them were planted with the public participation. As many as 366 persons had joined as sponsors by paying Rs. 3,000 each.

It had mobilised Rs. 10.98 lakh for growing trees at the park and it was deposited as a Corpus Fund. Name board of the sponsors would be maintained at the trees which they sponsored.

He said the preliminary works for installing replicas of world monuments would begin soon. Similarly, a sand pit would be established on 1.5 acres at the centre of the park. It had been proposed to build a meditation hall to cater to the needs of a section of visitors. There was a plan to form bicycle track for 2-km length. The corporation would pay special attention to collect funds from various sources.
