‘Operation Muskaan:’ 22 children rescued

Four police teams search children’s homes in Tiruchi

As part of ‘Operation Muskaan’, a nationwide campaign to rescue abandoned, untraced, and missing children, 22 children were rescued over the last two days by the city police jointly with District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) and the Childline.

Four teams

Split into four teams, the Anti Human Trafficking Unit of the city police along with DCPU and Childline representatives carried out checks in 12 children’s homes in different areas in the city.

The checks were carried out in Fort, Srirangam, Golden Rock, and Cantonment ranges as part of the operation carried out on Wednesday and Thursday.

The teams carried out checks in around 25 public places, including Chathram and central bus stands, Woraiyur, Uyyakondan Thirumalai, Tiruchi railway junction, Big Bazaar street and Srirangam.

Official sources said eight of the 22 children who were rescued by the teams in the last two days were child labourers.

A couple of children from other States and five abandoned children were also rescued during ‘Operation Muskaan’ which would continue for a month.

All the rescued children were handed over to the Childline.

The operation is being carried out to rescue abandoned, missing, and untraced children and reunite them with their family, the sources said.
