Enforcing the helmet rule strictly, the police went after violators booking cases and imposing fines against them across the central zone.

On the first day of the implementation of the rule on July 1, the police booked 5,948 cases in Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Karur, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam districts against the violators.

The fine amount collected from the violators was Rs. 5.65 lakh on July 1 alone, police sources said.

Thanjavur district topped in the list of cases booked with the figures being 1,779 followed by Nagapattinam (1062), Pudukottai (916), Karur (773), Tiruchi (640), Ariyalur (306), Tiruvarur (292), and Perambalur (180).

In Tiruchi city alone, around 500 cases were booked and fines imposed on violators with the police impounding their vehicle documents.

Police say compliance to helmet rule was pretty good as several motorists made it a point to wear it instead of getting penalised.

About 90 per cent of the motorists complied with the rule in Tiruchi city on day one, said the Commissioner of Police Sanjay Mathur and added that drives against violators would continue.

Although riders of motorcycles had complied with the rule, those riding pillion were found not wearing the headgear in the district at several places, say the police.
