Police stations in the city limits have been brought under the ambit of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) units to put in place a monitoring mechanism.

Three CCTV units have been installed in every city police station with one of them installed inside the station and the other at the entrance to monitor the activities taking place within and outside the station building.

The cameras were installed with assistance provided by a technical team of the city police recently with funds provided by the State government.

The city police accounts for a number of 14 law and order and six crime police stations coming under the four ranges – Cantonment, Fort, Golden Rock, and Srirangam.

In addition, the units have been installed at the All Women Police stations functioning at Fort, Srirangam, Golden Rock and Cantonment.

In all, 72 cameras had been fixed in the 24 police stations.

These units were installed to ensure transparency in police functioning by insertion of technology, Commissioner of Police Shailesh Kumar Yadav told The Hindu .

Sources say accountability would be ensured with the installation of units as the activities taking place within and outside the station building would be monitored through the surveillance cameras.

The units had been fixed at the station entrance, the reception room and the third one facing the cell inside the station.

The cameras have 30 to 40 days back up facility and the footages could be viewed at any point of time, said a senior police officer.

The conduct of the police personnel and visitors approaching the station could be checked, say the sources.
