Preference for differently-abled, elderly in voting

January 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - TIRUCHI:

Differently-abled persons, senior citizens, and women carrying infants would be given preference in exercising their franchise during the polling for the byelection to the Srirangam Assembly constituency, Collector and District Election Officer K.S.Palanisamy has said.

In a press release, Mr.Palanisamy said that instructions have been given to officials to create a separate queue for such persons and accord them priority in voting. Ramps have been provided in all polling booths for the benefit of differently-abled persons.

Hearing and visually-impaired persons would be allowed to take along a person above 18 years of age to assist them in exercising their franchise. Such assistants would have to submit an affidavit to maintain secrecy of the vote caste by the hearing or visually-challenged and affirming that he or she had not acted as assistant for anyone else at any other booth, the release said.
