“History Exhibition” organised by Brindavan Vidyalaya in Tiruvanaikovil here on Friday and Saturday helped students gain a perspective on various ancient civilisations.

With the theme “Walk through ancient civilisations”, the exhibition enabled students to visualise rich human history and culture of four civilisations — The Indus Valley, Chinese, Egyptian, and Mesopotamian. Students had an opportunity to understand through the exhibits the city of Harappa, its trade and commerce, an ancient house of that era with a focus on civic amenities.

The Chinese civilisation focussed on the Shang and Zhou dynasty.

Agriculture and trade to inventions that changed the world were displayed. From agriculture and trade, students were exposed to ancient farming techniques.

A silk weaving loom stood out for the extraordinary skill of the Chinese. The other exhibits included kites, military aircraft and a model on Dujiangyan Irrigation system. The first mapping of stars and solar and lunar calendars all inscribed on tortoise shell bones in Chinese script were other attractions.

The exhibits on Egyptian civilisation had the great pyramid model, valley temple, mortuary temple, and the causeway presented one of complete feel of the Giza plateau.

A model on ancient clay oven designed during ancient Egypt, and another on the Shaduf which helped Egyptians to water their fields were the other attractions. Cities such as Sumer, Babylon, and Assyria were included. Students of class 4 to 8 were involved in the exhibition for the past week to understand the characteristic features of every civilisation. Clad in the typical ancient style of the respective civilisation, students explained the significance of the models prepared by them in consultation with the teachers.
