Awareness on eye donation has been very low and to sensitising the masses to the importance of this long-term vision, a group of volunteers of Team of Social Service (TOSS) has launched an innovative door-to-door motivation programme in coordination with the Joseph Eye Hospital in the city.

The campaign, which was launched on Sunday, will be organised in all major residential areas in Tiruchi in the evening. A group of 60 volunteers, divided into four batches each, will visit their residential areas.

The volunteers, carrying a bucket, offer a plastic material that looks like an eye lens to each member and advise them to drop it into the bucket after obtaining their consent in an application format. “The Joseph Eye Hospital issues an identity card which should be preserved by the donors,” says V. Saiprasanth, president of TOSS.

The campaign will be launched till September 8, said Suba Prabhu, deputy administrator of the hospital.

The campaign evoked overwhelming response from the masses. “We will paste a handbill at the entrance of the houses complimenting the applicants’ decision on eye donation,” say the volunteers.
