Amid tight police security, the Vinayaka idols processions in the city passed off peacefully on Sunday.
Idols of various sizes and hues installed on the Vinayaka Chathurthi on August 29 were taken out in processions from various parts of the city and immersed in the Cauvery.
Pujas were performed to the idols before they were transported in mini goods carriers for immersion.
The city was brought under enhanced security cover in connection with the idols processions with posse of police personnel deployed at vantage points to ensure order.
To add teeth to security measures, personnel of the Striking Force armed with necessary paraphernalia were deployed at Gandhi Market to prevent any untoward incidents.
Riot-control vehicles were positioned and surveillance cameras installed. The services of Home Guards personnel were utilised. The idols were immersed one after the other.
The Cauvery Bridge was closed for buses and other heavy vehicle movement. Police sources said the idols which were removed by the police for having been installed at new places without obtaining permission were later taken back by the respective organising committees following talks between them and the police.
Idols installed in the city’s peripheral areas and in neighbouring Perambalur district were brought to the Cauvery and immersed. Idols were taken out in processions from various parts of Tiruchi and Thanjavur districts and immersed in the Cauvery and other water bodies.
