Barely five days after five people succumbed to electrocution after coming into contact with high-tension wires passing too close to living quarters, an auto driver, Kona Sathibabu (29), died in a similar incident at Krishnalanka in Vijayawada on Saturday. His brother, K. Babji, who suffered burns in the mishap is undergoing treatment in a private hospital.

The tragedy occurred when Sathibabu came into contact with a high-tension electric cable passing along the second floor of a building.

How it happened?

The victim’s father K. Appa Rao said Sathibabu came into contact with the electric wire when he was trying to wear a wet lungi. The cloth accidentally touched the high-tension wire.

Babji, who attempted to rescue his brother, suffered burns, said Mr. Rao.

“The 11KV electric cables, which were insulated with plastic pipes, caught Sathibabu as they are very close to the two-storeyed building,” said an eye-witness.

“When Babji tried to rescue Sathibabu and pulled him with force the latter fell on the wall causing a head injury. He is survived by his wife, Bhavani and two children,” Sathibabu’s mother, Kanna Talli lamented.

Krishnalanka sub-inspector N. Balaswamy, electricity officials visited the spot and the police have registered a case of suspicious death under Section 174 of CrPC. Corporator Chandana Suresh appealed to the State government to announce ex gratia to the bereaved family and provide medical treatment to Babji.
