Air passengers coming to Vijayawada can now hope for a swanky arrival and departure terminal with better amenities at Gannavaram airport as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is contemplating to construct a new terminal at an estimated cost of Rs.300 crore.

Modern facility

The upcoming facility can cater to the needs of at least 300 domestic and 200 international passengers separately at a time. As a part of the plan, a ground plus single storied building with a shopping complex will be constructed, apart from ultra modern facilities including eateries, escalators, restrooms and others to cater to the needs of the increasing flow of passengers. Baggage scanners and separate trolleys for the convenience of differently abled and elderly persons will also be provided, the officials said.

On the communication front, the passengers can enjoy Wi-Fi facility at the terminal, said officials

Blueprint submitted

A blueprint for the project had already been submitted to a high-level technical team headed by AAI Chairman Alok Sinha during their visit to the airport on Thursday. “We explained the team about the need to construct a spacious terminal considering the increasing passenger flow,” said Airport Director B.G. Patil, adding that the works for the project will begin at the earliest. Senior officials also said that the terminal building would meet the requirements of rising passengers to Vijayawada, which is being considered for the capital of the State.

Politicians, industrialists, real-estate businessmen, especially from Hyderabad, are now making a beeline for Vijayawada to enquire about investments opportunities. To address the growing demand, the AAI has mooted the proposal for the new terminal, Mr. Patil added.
