August 02, 2014 12:34 am | Updated 12:34 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) will soon become free of litter and garbage dump, if the efforts of the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department fructify.

Orders issued

The State government has decided to implement a pilot project aimed at making the GMC litter free and dump free urban local body in compliance with the Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules 2000. Accordingly, the government, in its orders issued on Friday, entrusted the Leaf Industries Pvt. Ltd to prepare an action plan with an estimated consultancy fee of Rs. 16.4 lakh in the two key areas.

The action plan would cover assessment of the current scenario and designing a strategic and operational plan. This would be followed by system implementation through refresher training and handholding in addition to the IEC blitz. The Guntur Municipal Commissioner has been permitted to meet the expenditure from the general funds of the corporation after obtaining administrative sanction from the competent authority.

The Commissioner has been asked to release 50 per cent of the proposed consultancy fee as an advance towards initiating the activities and mobilising project staff. The balance would be released on the completion of the project.
