Hip fractures in women on rise, say surgeons

‘It is better for elderly women to avoid sleeping on floors’. These fractures can occur just due to a fall in bathroom or even falling from a chair. Due to ageing and lack of proper sleep, most elderly people tend to use sleeping pills and due to poor vision and drowsiness, they fall in the bathrooms.

Post menopause, women tend to develop different health complications due to hormonal imbalance. Among all, majority of cases are connected with osteoporosis and this in turn leading to hip and other fractures, especially in elderly women.

Though, no single cause has been identified, arthroscopic surgeons list out other factors that could lead to osteoporosis and fractures. Osteoporosis affects both men and women as it results in bone loss without any major symptoms, surgeons explain.

Often women, especially those aged above 65 years, suffer hip fractures due to stress on the particular region in the body. There can be many reasons like less mobility, lack of exposure to sun, vitamin D deficiency, which affects calcium metabolism in the body etc, says Dr. Meher Prasanna Rokkam, Arthroplasty and Arthroscopic surgeon.

These fractures can occur just due to a fall in bathroom or even falling from a chair. Due to ageing and lack of proper sleep, most elderly people tend to use sleeping pills and due to poor vision and drowsiness, they fall in the bathrooms. This apart, women suffer fractures while walking on slippery floors as well, he informs.

But there are advanced treatments like minimal invasive surgeries and hip replacement surgery to help patients. In minimal invasive surgery, the bone is fixed and is stabilised and patients are made to walk after three to four days of the surgery. Then there is the option of hip replacement surgery, which is almost painless and patients can walk the next day after undergoing surgery, he explains.

Prevention is always better than cure. It is better to avoid sleeping on the floors as elderly women can have problems while getting up from the floor due to extra stress on the bones, he adds.
