Wage earners in the unorganised sector and factory workers, affiliated to IFTU, on Thursday staged a dharna at the Office of Deputy Commissioner of Labour here seeking adequate compensation for thousands of wage earners and factory workers who lost livelihood due to Cyclone Hudhud.
IFTU State committee member D. Lakshmana Rao and district general secretary K. Sanyasi Rao told the media that the Labour Department had not included losses of small and marginal traders, workers in commercial establishments, and self-employed, who lost livelihood for one week to one month due to Hudhud in the three north Andhra coastal districts. The DCL too did not include their problems in the report submitted to the Central team, they alleged.
Mr. Lakshmana Rao said the Chief Minister had announced sops for industries hit by the cyclone on November 17 but there was no mention of compensation for traders, employees in service sector, and construction workers. He appealed to the Chief Minister to direct industries to pay wages to workers for the period declared as lay off by them. They called off protest after DCL Ananda Rao assured them that he would represent their demands to the government.
