As part of efforts to prevent traffic congestion on major thoroughfares, the APSRTC, Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) and the police department have decided to conduct a joint survey to identify bottle necks and evolve measures to ease them.
Accordingly, the survey will focus on identification of bus terminals, which are close to traffic junctions and narrow roads. These terminals have become major irritants in ensuring unobtrusive movement of traffic that leads to accidents. Such bus bays will be shifted to the nearby places for the convenience of commuters.
Police Commissioner A.B. Venkateswara Rao and RTC Regional Manager G. Sudeesh Kumar and Assistant Chief Traffic Control Officer Nagendra Kumar on Monday held a meeting work out a solution to traffic problems in the city.
810 vehicles booked
RTC officials requested Mr. Rao to see that private vehicles were not parked at bus stops. The Commissioner said the police had booked cases against 810 persons who parked vehicles near bus stops.
He appealed to APSRTC officials to ensure that buses stop at bus bays without causing inconvenience to other vehicles. When the Police Commissioner asked the RTC officials to identify buses that caused pollution, Mr. Sudeesh Kumar said a drive had been taken up, and 10 buses had already been identified. “The drive will continue, and buses will be allowed on the road only after taking up necessary repairs to minimise pollution,” he said.
Efforts to prevent thefts
Mr. Rao asked the RTC management to use CC Cameras in long-distance services to prevent thefts. Drivers are requested to observe suspects who board buses from various points and alert police, he said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police G.V.G. Ashok Kumar, Additional DCP (Traffic) T.V. Nagaraju and Depot Managers were present.
