The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is gearing up to meet to the drinking water needs of people during summer by taking up various works, including laying of a new pipeline from Prakasam barrage to Gangiredduladibba to draw 10 mgd water.

Every summer, residents of Patamata, Autonagar, Gurunanak Colony, Mogalrajpuram and Gunadala are forced to grapple with erratic water supply. Things turn worse when Ryves canal, the main supply unit for these areas, is closed during summer for maintenance. The VMC has prepared a comprehensive summer action plan to meet drinking water needs at an estimated cost of over Rs .6.5 crore.

“The new pipeline works from Prakasam Barrage to Gangiredduladibba will be completed in a fortnight, and once the supply commences, there will be no problems in the eastern part of the city,” said VMC Commissioner G. Veerapandian.

As part of the action plan, officials have identified 300 leakage points in the existing water distribution network across the city.

With complaints galore on water contamination from Ramalingeswaranagar Head Water Works, officials are planning to suspend supply from the unit and fix the problems, including repairs.

Works on the much-needed replacement of decades-old Errakatta pipeline with a new one are being taken up at a cost of Rs. 1.80 crore. Similarly, efforts are on to lay pipelines in VUDA Colony and VAMBAY Colony.

Emphasis is also being laid on repairing defunct borewells at various parts of the city. Tenders have already been called for, and works will be completed in a fortnight, officials claimed.
