Cyber crime is on the rise and women should be doubly careful, as 90 per cent of the victims of cyber crime are women, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) S. Varada Raju said while addressing students of Andhra University at a seminar on cyber crime held here at AU Ambedkar Hall on Tuesday.
The awareness seminar was jointly hosted by the university and Cyber Crime Investigation Cell of City Police.
“The police is there to check crime and investigate, but by observing a few preventive measures one can easily safeguard themselves from becoming victims of cyber crime,” said the ADCP.
Mr. Varada Raju also cautioned that crime committed cannot be concealed and it was a myth that the identity of the offender cannot be detected. “There are systems in place that can locate a person in the cyber space,” he said.
Andhra University Vice-Chancellor G.S.N. Raju in his address pointed out that information technology was a boon as well as a bane. “Young minds should choose the advantages of the technology and not indulge in doing wrong things using the technology,” he said.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) T. Ravi Kumar Murthy, in his address said that cyber crime was a new area of crime and many governments across the globe were fighting to control the rapidly growing crime rate.
Main reasonGiving details of various cyber crimes such as online job rackets and lottery scams, the DCP pointed out that greed was one of the main reasons that lures victims into the cyber crime net.
Assistant Commissioner of Police D.N. Mahesh, urged the students not to disclose their identity to unknown persons over the Internet. “Your personal details can be used by many, including terrorists to do wrong things,” he said.
Mr. Mahesh even cautioned the students not to give their cell phone to any unknown person and leave behind personal details even in photocopying shops.
Giving a Power-Point presentation, Inspector of Cyber Crime Cell K. Satyanarayana Rao, specified the various types of cyber crime in vogue such as email abuse, phishing and vishing, online job and lottery fraud.
