Film societies to screen Tamil documentaries

September 19, 2014 12:24 am | Updated 12:24 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Considering the magnitude of social and environmental issues that plague the city and its people, Environmental Film Society (EFS) and Vizag Film Society (VFS) are joining hands to screen Tamil documentary movies directed by Madurai-based filmmaker R.P. Amudhan.

Three short films -- ‘The Road’, ‘Hey Mr. Gandhi, ‘Leave the Indians Alone!’ and ‘Seruppu’ (footwear) will be screened on September 21. With an aim to deliver a strong message and to reach out to diverse audiences, the selected films, based on traffic awareness, issues on special economic zone and the lifestyle of slum-dwellers, will be screened with Tamil and English subtitles.

Training

Further, to train the aspirants in documentary filmmaking, director Amudhan, who has the best film award and national jury award to his credit, will be visiting the city on Saturday. “The training session is facilitated to the team of EFS, women’s wing of Green Climate, and Green Earth Films,” according to J.V. Ratnam of Green Climate.

Given the fact that cinema is an effective tool to connect with the environmental activists and an army of like-minded groups, the initiative has been taken up by the organisers. “Moreover, these movies are in tune with the local issues which have been impacting various stakeholders for quite a long time,” Narava Prakasa Rao of VFS and volunteers G. Sushma, Sirisha and R. Manohar have said.

On Sunday free screening begins at 10 a.m. at Builders’ Association hall Tycoon Hotel complex.
