Merger of schools opposed

March 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:03 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Human Rights Forum has opposed the proposed move of the State government to close some primary, upper primary and high schools and open cluster schools.

The move proposed merger of five to six schools and open a school in their place and it would lead to 80 per cent of government schools being closed, forum district president M. Sarat and general secretary K. Anuradha said in a statement.

The move was also in violation of the Right to Education Act that stipulated that schools should be in the neighbourhood.

Many schools still lacked amenities and even in model schools employment was on contract basis.

They expressed the apprehension that schools would meet the same fate as hostels that were wound up.
