BJP and several organisations on Tuesday launched a beach clean-up drive under the ‘Swachh Visakha’ programme.

Around 1,000 students and youth from various organisations, including Narayana institutions, NRI Academy, SV Seva (STBL Balaji), Yoga Bharathi, ABVP, BJYNM and Voice of Vizag, an NGO, enthusiastically participated.

Visakhapatnam MP K. Haribabu and former Union Minister D. Purandeswari participated in the clean-up. Mr. Haribabu particularly paid attention to removing any plastic garbage and exhorted students to do it.

“The clean-up is planned for two-days as garbage from the road is thrown onto the beach after the cyclone. The beach is an iconic part of the city and we wanted to do our bit to keep it clean,” said BJP State executive member P.V. N. Madhav.

The clean-up on Tuesday was from the Coastal Battery to Ramakrishna Beach. On Wednesday, it will be taken up from the Kursura Submarine Museum to VUDA Park.

“The clean-up will be taken up again after Deepavali,” Mr. Madhav said.

The garbage cleared was kept in bags and lifted by two vehicles of GVMC.
