Two school-going sisters were killed in a road accident at Pattabhi Rami Reddy Gardens here on Saturday, leaving their parents inconsolable.
Jayasri (11) of Class VI and Vijayasri (9) of Class IV, both students of Ravindra Bharathi School in Murali Nagar, were being dropped to school on a motorcycle by their relative. They were to appear for the last examination of the academic year. They hardly covered any distance from their residence when the accident took place. The motorcyclist took a right turn into a lane and kept to extreme left of the road when the bus of a private school coming in the opposite direction hit them. The girls were thrown off the motorcycle and bus ran over them. One of the sisters was killed on the spot and the other succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital. The motorcycle rider fell to his left and escaped with minor injuries, a traffic constable, who was present at the scene of accident, said.
Pinisetty Appanna, father of the deceased girls, is an employee of Franco India, which is executing some works for Visakhapatnam Port. Their mother Ramanamma is a housewife.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) L. Arjun went to the house and enquired about the incident.
“Authorities should immediately put in place speed-breakers on this road to prevent accidents. The bus seemed to be hurtling down the road at high speed and the driver must have lost control while trying to avoid hitting something on the left and hit the motorcyclist,” said Mahesh, a contract employee living in the area.
The Fifth Town police are investigating the case.
