The Waltair Division of East Coast Railway (ECoR) is fully geared up to take up the ‘Swachh Bharat’ (Clean India) campaign in a big way from October 2 by ensuring cleanliness in trains, at railway stations, railway quarters and other railway premises, according to Divisional Railway Manager Anil Kumar. The railways would be the frontrunner in the cleanliness mission, the brainchild of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to pay tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth centenary, which falls in 2019. Cleanliness was not an easy task but all out efforts would be made to educate rail users and the general public on keeping trains and railway premises clean, which was dear to the Mahatma, Mr. Anil Kumar told the media here on Tuesday.

An officer would be nominated to each railway station in the Division to ensure cleanliness at the stations. There would be distribution of work down the line and said that even the trade unions were supporting the cause. “I will be available at the Divisional Headquarters,” he said.

When his attention was drawn to the lack of water in some trains right from the starting point, Mr. Anil Kumar said that the issue had not come to his notice but agreed to ensure that there was no scarcity of water in trains originating in Visakhapatnam.

He said that the Division had 149 coaches with bio-toilets and efforts were being made to procure more such coaches. The bio-toilets would prevent cleanliness on the tracks, particularly at railway stations.

He said that special attention was being given to improvement of cleanliness on the Gnanapuram-side of Visakhapatnam Railway Station and the Railway Main Hospital on the Station Road.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager M. Yelvender Yadav and Senior Divisional Engineer (Coordination) Victor Joseph were present.
