Wi-Fi towers are now official

July 30, 2014 10:51 pm | Updated July 23, 2016 11:41 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

The State Government has accorded in-principle permission to set up Wi-Fi towers for 4 G services.

A GO on erection of cell towers, with several stringent conditions for erection of towers, would soon be amended, it was learnt.

Following the government’s decision, the GVMC had accorded permission for 44 wi-fi towers earlier. An additional 46 were applied for subsequently, it was learnt. Permission has also been accorded to put up aerial cables instead of digging up and laying them.

4G increases internet connection speed much above 100 mbps.

Residents resist

On Wednesday, residents of Ramajogipeta at ward 20 of Maharanipeta resisted the setting up of a tower on a four-storied building on a four-foot road when the owner of the building came armed with the orders and some workers.

Visakhapatnam South MLA Vasupalli Ganesh Kumar also arrived and spoke to GVMC officials about the erection of the tower.

Earlier, locals opposed the erection of the tower and represented the issue on June 16 to the Municipal Commissioner. Municipal officials then maintained that no permission had been accorded for any tower in the city as none complied with the conditions in the GO.
