The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday released its first list of candidates, comprising 96 names, for the elections to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) scheduled on August 22. The BBMP has 198 wards.

Prominent names include former deputy mayor S. Harish, former chairpersons of various standing committees Umesh Shetty, Manjunath Raju, Sridhar Reddy and A. Kodanda Reddy.

The list was finalised after a nearly three-hour discussion by prominent leaders including Union Ministers Ananth Kumar and D.V. Sadananda Gowda, and State unit president Pralhad Joshi.

A senior leader, who participated in the meeting, told The Hindu that the list consisted of names that had been “unanimously” recommended by its ward-level core committees. “These are the wards from where the local committees have recommended only one name, unlike others which have recommended names of more than one candidate,” he said.

The interesting feature of this list is that some former corporators have got tickets for their wives in the wards reserved for women.

After the meeting, the BJP leader in charge of BBMP elections, R. Ashok, told reporters that the second list would be announced within three days.
