BJP suspends councillor arrested for shoplifting

BBMP councillor H.S. Lalitha, who was arrested on Tuesday on charge of shoplifting, was granted bail by the 9th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) court on Wednesday evening.

Lalitha is from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and represents Girinagar ward. She was caught red-handed stealing clothes worth Rs. 5,000 from a readymade garment showroom in Gandhinagar.

The Upparpet police had arrested her and produced her before the jurisdictional magistrate on Tuesday night.

She had been remanded in judicial custody and shifted to the Bangalore Parappana Agrahara Central Prison.

The BJP on Wednesday suspended Lalitha from the primary membership of the party.

City BJP president Subbanna said that the decision was taken after the councillor was arrested by the Upparpet police on the charge of theft.

The order will come into effect immediately, he added.
