In yet another case of phishing, a savings bank account of an official working with the Doddaballapur town administration, was hacked and Rs. 46,000 was withdrawn online.
The victim, Nagarajaiah, was shocked when he realised that cash had been withdrawn from his account online in the night when he got his Canara Bank passbook updated on July 28.
Further verification revealed that the fraudster had made 19 online transactions to withdraw Rs. 46,000. He lodged a complaint with the senior manager of the Canara Bank in Doddaballapura town branch before blocking his ATM card. “I have had the savings bank account in the Canara Bank from 2011, and this is the first time such a thing has happened,” he said.
‘Not opted for online banking’
Interestingly, Mr. Nagarajaiah said that he had neither opted for online banking nor had he made any online transaction. Recently, he had swiped his debit card a few times to buy medicines, he added.
There is a possibility that either the details of the savings bank account had been compromised or it was cloned while Nagarajaiah was using his debit card for purchases.
