The heavy rain accompanied by squall left a trail of destruction in the city on Thursday. Apart from turning roads into rivulets, the heavy rain and squally brought down several trees.
According to Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials, the worst affected was the south zone which saw nearly 300 trees crashing down. The trees also brought down several electricity poles and lines with them, cutting off power supply in several areas in the south zone. Since Thursday night, officials of the Department of Forests, Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom), and Fire and Emergency Services have been trying to restore normalcy.
On Friday, BBMP Administrator T.M. Vijay Bhaskar and Commissioner G. Kumar Naik inspected several areas across the city where the rain had wreaked a havoc.
Mr. Naik, who inspected J.P. Nagar, Padmanabhanagar, and Jayanagar T Block and 9th Block, directed BBMP officials to first clear the trees that have fallen on houses and main roads, and later clear the ones on the cross roads on priority..
Meanwhile, Bescom received a whopping 5,533 complaints between April 30 and May 1
Bescom Managing Director Pankaj Kumar Pandey said around 200 electricity poles were damaged on Thursday when wind speeds were as high as 70 kmph.
