One of the oldest private hospitals in the city, Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals began as a small clinic-cum-nursing home in Sowcarpet in 1933.
Its founder A.J. Mehta and his wife Savitaben Mehta expanded the hospital and moved it to its present location in Chetpet, in 1955, as a multi-specialty birthing and surgical unit.
In its 81 year, the hospital is looking at opening another branch, close to Chennai — in Thiruverkadu on NH 4.
The hospital has three units — Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals and Dr. Mehta’s Children’s Hospitals, both in Chetpet, and Dr. Mehta’s Advanced Surgical Centre in T. Nagar — with nearly 300 beds.
“The first phase of work at the new hospital will be completed in a year’s time. It will have trauma care, obstetrics and gynaecology, advanced surgery, intensive care and paediatric sub-specialties. We are starting with 200 beds and will expand in a phased manner,” said Sameer Mehta, director of the hospital.
The upcoming hospital will have separate units for paediatrics, adults and those aged above 65. The unit for elderly persons has been named ‘Autumn Spring’.
Every year, the hospital receives over a lakh patients, of which 40,000 are paediatric cases.
Over the years, the hospital has recorded more than a lakh successful births, putting obstetrics and gynaecology among the top specialties.
Currently, Dr. Mehta’s has 81 sub-specialties and super specialties.
In paediatric care, its sub-specialties include neonatology, intensive care, nephrology, gastroenterology, cardiology, endocrinology and oncology.
“We are also expanding intensive care units (ICU) to 80 beds. Currently, we have 49 beds — 30 in neonatal ICU, 10 in paediatric ICU and the rest for adults. We are also setting up ICUs for neuro, orthopaedic, cardiac and advanced surgeries,” he said.
Associated with the hospital for more than three decades, S. Seethalakshmi, head of laboratory services, said the laboratory has expanded from doing basic investigation to having all units, including biochemistry, microbiology with immunology and serology, haematology, cytology and histopathology.
