Fewer toilets, no drinking water, poor signage

July 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated April 01, 2016 10:58 am IST - CHENNAI:

Though commuters were enthused over the first look of the Chennai Metro Rail stations and trains, they were quick to notice some hitches that need to be set right soon.

One of the major complaints is that the there is just one toilet per station (in an enclosure there will be one each for men, women and differently-abled). For a mass rapid transit that aims to cater to thousands of people every day, one toilet may not suffice. David Manohar, an activist and commuter said, “I couldn’t spot a single toilet. Even if it was present in every station, I couldn’t find a single signage.”

Non-availability of drinking water was another grouse of commuters. Also, there are problems with the display of station names in a few stations; both platforms showed the same destination in some stations. Officials of Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. said they would soon make arrangements to provide drinking water facilities soon. “If people would like to use the toilet, they can contact the staff in the station and they will be guided,” he said.
