The Madras High Court on Tuesday dismissed pleas that challenged the public notice issued by the State government, which announced that wearing of helmets by two-wheeler riders was mandatory from July 1.
When a plea by D. Gopalakrishnan came up for hearing, the First Bench comprising Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam dismissed it, observing that there was no public interest in the plea filed by him.
When another petitioner, who appeared as party-in-person in the court, with the similar prayer, the Bench reiterated there was no public interest and only persons who had problem with the rule had to move the court themselves.
Justice N. Kirubakaran had earlier this month ordered that wearing of helmets by two-wheeler riders should be made mandatory by the State government from July 1 and the State government had issued public notice about the court order.
Petitioner Gopalakrishnan in his plea sought for an interim stay of the single judge’s order contending that one of the directions to authorities to impound documents of the riders of the vehicle was against certain provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and contrary to a State G.O. issued in 2007 and 2011.
