Man killed two weeks before daughter’s wedding

A carpenter and a 24-year-old youth were killed in two separate road accidents near Tambaram on Tuesday. A carpenter from Sebastiarpuram, Irumbuliyur, E. Vembuli (48) who was waiting to cross the Grand Southern Trunk Road near the Irumbuliyur traffic signal, was hit by a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus on route number 122 (Adyar-Tiruvannamalai) which also hit two motorcycles before killing him..

Relatives and residents who gathered at the accident spot said Vembuli was out distributing invites for his daughter's wedding, that was to take place in two weeks. Traffic police said the accident took place at 9.40 a.m. and the signal was ‘red’.

Niteesh Sharma (23) and Joseph Daniel (42), both proceeding towards Vandalur, suffered injuries, were rushed to a private hospital in Chromepet for treatment.

Demonstration

Residents of Irumbuliyur staged a demonstration urging the Highways Department to complete road-widening work early. Agitators withdrew the protest after assurance from Highways officials to remove the old road-divider within a week. A case has been registered and Chromepet traffic wing police arrested the bus driver, Madhavan, 41.
