A pregnant woman, who was on her way to a hospital for a check-up, gave birth to a boy inside the women’s compartment of a suburban train in Saidapet on Monday.
Timely response
Timely response by a Railway Protection Force constable helped ensure medical help to the mother and child.
A 30-year-old RPF constable M. Anusuya was on duty at Mambalam police station when she received a call from the RPF control room that a woman, who was experiencing labour pain, was travelling on a train from Tambaram.
“I took a train from Mambalam and had just reached Saidapet, when the train in which the woman was travelling arrived from Guindy. The woman, seated on the floor, had just given birth to her son,” Ms. Anusuya said.
With help from the passengers, she shifted the woman and the baby to a stretcher.
Ticket collector’s
room
“We placed the stretcher carefully on the table inside the ticket collector’s room. We had already called a private clinic and two nurses who rushed to the station.
They removed the umbilical cord. The woman and the new born were later taken in a 108 neo-natal ambulance to the Chennai Corporation health centre hospital in Saidapet,” said Ms. Anusuya.
Train halts
Due to this incident the train halted for 19 minutes in the station.
The mother, Aruna, is a native of Tiruvallur district. she lives in Tiruvanchery near Tambaram.
She was on her way to the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Egmore for a regular check-up.
She entered into severe labour pain suddenly when the training was nearing Guindy, said sub-inspector K.P. SebastianMambalam RPF. The newborn is her second child. The mother and baby are doing fine.
