Four trade unions, including the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, have given a five-day strike call beginning January 6 in the coal sector to protest against various policies of the government and the Coal Mines Special Provisions Bill.

The decision was taken at a meeting in Ranchi on Wednesday. The participating unions include the BMS, the Indian National Trade Union Congress, the All India Trade Union Congress and the Hind Mazdoor Sabha. The Centre for Trade Unions as called a strike separately on January 17.

The unions had called for a day’s strike on November 24 but later called it off as the process of Assembly and local elections were on in many States. However, the CITU had opposed the deferment and went ahead to serve its own strike notice for January 17. Their demands include regularisation of contractual workers and several other service matters.
