Even as the city is witnessing a number of collective attempts to scientifically treat domestic waste, a section of private party organisers and catering service providers use the city’s pocket roads as the safest dumping spots.
Roads leading to the Kozhikode minibypass road are the best example, where strangers leave plastic waste bundles. Though the city Corporation and Kudumbasree workers manage to clear the spot everyday, the trend continues in the absence of proper legal action.
Residents of the area say that on most occasions the violators have been identified as private party organisers and caterers.
There are times when such persons are caught red-handed from certain spots, they say.
True hassle
A Kudumbasree worker in the city complains that they are compelled to take away these waste bundles also though they were supposed to manage only the domestic waste. “At times, we burn it along the road as moving it to the dumping yard is a strenuous and time-consuming task,” she says.
Members of some residents’ associations say the trend is continuing uninterrupted as the vigil of local people will weaken in the night.
Aneesh Krishnan, a native of Karaparamba, says that stray dog menace has become a new challenge for pedestrians and motorists on the minibypass road with the dumping of waste, mostly containing food items. Sometimes the commuters along these roads are chased by dogs, he adds.
