Mumbai varsity beats LSE in top 20 list of billionaire alumni

October 27, 2014 07:36 pm | Updated May 23, 2016 07:34 pm IST - MUMBAI:

Mumbai University figures as the only Indian university in the list of top 20 global universities with highest number of billionaire alumni. This year’s Wealth-X and UBS Billionaire Census puts Mumbai University at ninth position, a rank higher than the London School of Economics and Political Science. Universities in the U.S. have claimed 16 of the top 20 slots.

The three universities that top the list are: University of Pennsylvania, Harvard University and Yale University. They have 25, 22 and 20 billionaire undergraduate alumni. The University of Mumbai has 12 billionaire undergraduate alumni.

“Despite the international repute of these top-ranking higher education institutions, it is worth noting that only 16 per cent of the world’s ‘educated’ billionaires attended these schools; 84 per cent did not. Today’s billionaires were awarded their Bachelor’s degrees from over 700 different universities around the world,” the report states.

According to the report, there are 2,325 billionaires in the world. Their total wealth amounts to $7,291 billion. The number of the world’s billionaires has increased by 7.1 per cent in comparison to 2013.

Mumbai city ranks 11 in the list of top 20 billionaire cities. It is the only Indian city to figure in the list and has 28 billionaires who cumulatively own $97 billion. The top 10 billionaire cities are New York, Moscow, Hong Kong, London, Beijing, Sao Paulo, Istanbul, Dubai, Paris and Singapore.

India ranks sixth among the top 40 billionaire countries. But the number of billionaires has come down this year, in comparison to 2013. While there were 103 billionaires in 2013, the number came down to 100 this year. Wealth owned by Indian billionaires amounted to $175 billion, while they owned $180 billion last year. The country retained its sixth position in the world ranking though.

The U.S. stands first among billionaire countries. China is a distant second. “There are more billionaires in the United States than in the next four countries with the largest billionaire populations — China, the United Kingdom, Germany and Russia — combined. While the number of China’s billionaires grew twice as fast as that of the United States, the latter still has three times more billionaires than the former,” says the report.
