Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray on Monday announced that his party will exit the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

His decision comes four days after the party ended its 25-year-old alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after the disagreements over the seat sharing arrangements for the Maharashtra Assembly elections.

“I have asked Anant Geete to resign from the Union Cabinet. He will submit his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he returns from his U.S. trip,” Mr. Thackeray said.

Mr. Geete, the lone member of the Sena in the Cabinet handles the Heavy Industries Ministry.

The Sena’s decision is also likely to impact the party’s rule in Mumbai Municipality, as it shares power with the help of the BJP. However, no decision on breaking the alliance in the municipality was taken on Monday.
