Sunil Kumar Gautam, a 1989 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram and Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre, took over as the Additional Director-General of Police of the Union Territory of Puducherry on Wednesday following the transfer of IGP Praveen Ranjan to New Delhi.

Mr. Gautam was earlier the Joint Commissioner of Police in Delhi. Mr. Gautam was given the guard of honour at the Police Headquarters here, where he arrived on Wednesday to take charge.

Though in normal circumstances, an officer in the rank of Inspector General of Police heads the police force in the Union Territory, Mr. Gautam has assumed office as the city’s first Additional Director General of Police
