India on Thursday dispatched relief material to cyclone hit Fiji as part of its Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief efforts in the neighbourhood.
Officials said an Indian Air Force C-17 cargo aircraft airlifted 40 tons of relief material to the island nation. This includes food, medicines and tents.
Fiji was hit by a massive cyclone ‘Winston’ last Saturday that left at least 44 dead. The island nation has requested foreign aid.
India has already announced aid in the aftermath of the disaster. “Reaching out to a friend in need. India extends USD one million in immediate assistance to Fiji after devastating Cyclone Winston hits,” MEA spokesperson Vikas Swaroop had tweeted on Monday.
Cyclone Winston was the most powerful tempest recorded in the southern hemisphere and hit Fiji at speeds of 200 miles per hour, causing extensive flooding and rendering thousands homeless.
