Italy is among the European nations spied upon by US and British intelligence agencies, the weekly l’Espresso reported on its website Thursday.

It quoted former Guardian journalists Glenn Greenwald as saying: “The NSA (National Surveillance Agency) is carrying out a lot of spying activities, also on European governments, including the Italian one.” L’Espresso said it would publish in its print edition, out on Friday, extracts of documents from US whistleblower Edward Snowden showing that Britain’s Government Communications Headquarters also spied on Italian officials, sharing the information with the NSA.

In a meeting in Rome Wednesday, Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta spoke about the alleged spying scandal with US Secretary of State John Kerry, winning assurances that it would be investigated; sources from Letta’s office told the ANSA news agency.
