Minutes after his bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jingping, President Mahinda Rajapaksa announced a reduction in fuel prices and electricity tariff with effect from Tuesday night.

“In appreciation of China #SriLanka friendship, the President announces reduction of fuel prices and electricity tariff effective tonight,” said a tweet posted from his official twitter account. While electricity tariff is to be reduced by 25 per cent, kerosene will be priced Rs. 20 less.

The announcements come days before Uva Province — located to the east of Sri Lanka’s Central Province — goes to polls.
