U.S. military officials said that a North Korean rocket failed shortly after launch on Friday.

North American Aerospace Defence Command and U.S. Northern Command officials said U.S. systems detected the launch of the rocket and tracked it over the Yellow Sea.

In a statement they said that initial indications showed that the first stage fell into the sea 165 kilometres west of Seoul, South Korea, and the remaining stages of the rocket failed. The officials added that neither the missile nor debris were a threat at any time.
