Two elephants from the reserve forests of Tamil Nadu damaged the crops at Pedduru village of Ramakuppam mandal in the district in the early hours of Tuesday.
Divisional Forest Officer (Chittoor) T. Chakrapani along with personnel of the department rushed to the spot and oversaw arrangements to drive the animals back into the thicket. "The two tuskers emerged into the fields at around 4.00 a.m. and destroyed a small stretch of banana plantation.
The damage was very minimum. Our trackers and watchers coordinated with each other and drove the elephants back into TN forests," the official said.
The villagers were thoroughly warned not to tease the animals, he added. "Our elephant-proof trenches works at vulnerable areas of Gudupalle, Kuppam, Ramakuppam and Shantipuram are going on at a fast pace. Once the works are completed, the elephants menace would get reduced to the maximum levels," he said.
Meanwhile, the tuskers raids on Tuesday came after a gap of a fortnight in the tri-state junction.
